What is Vardenafil? What is Levitra?

Vardenafil is a sexual enhancer solf under the brandname Levitra.

The active ingredient belongs to the group of PDE-5 inhibitors and specifically helps to treat erectile dysfunction in adult men. Taken as a tablet, the drug increases the flow of blood into the penis and thus ensures an increased or prolonged erection. Here you can read all important information about the use, effects and side effects of Vardenafil.

How Vardenafil works

An erection occurs when the erectile tissue of the penis fills with blood during sexual arousal. Normally they have little blood circulation because the blood vessels are narrow - the smooth muscle cells in the vessel walls are tense.

When sexually aroused, however, nitrogen monoxide (NO) is released first, which in turn increases the release of cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate). This messenger ensures that the smooth muscles in the vascular walls relax. As a result, the blood vessels expand and the blood supply to the erectile tissue increases significantly - the penis hardens.

The enzyme phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE-5) ensures that the erection subsides. It occurs mainly in the cavernous bodies of the arterioles (tiny arteries) and breaks down the cGMP. Thus the erection goes back again.

As a PDE-5 inhibitor, the active ingredient vardenafil now blocks phosphodiesterase 5. The concentration of cGMP thus increases, which strengthens or prolongs the erection.

It is important to mention that Vardenafil itself does not increase pleasure and does not work without sexual arousal.

Absorption, breakdown and excretion of vardenafil

The sexual enhancer is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream after oral administration and takes effect within 30 to 60 minutes. This lasts up to eight hours. Vardenafil is broken down in the liver and excreted mainly through the stool.
When is Vardenafil used?

Vardenafil is approved for the symptomatic treatment of erectile dysfunction ("impotence") in male adults.
How Vardenafil is used

It is usually recommended to take one tablet of ten milligrams of Vardenafil 25 to 60 minutes before sexual activity. If necessary, the dose can be increased to a maximum of 20 milligrams or reduced to five milligrams. Men of older age should first try a five milligram dose.
